Pokémon Strategy
Behind the adventure lies a deep strategy game. The Pokémon Life strategy section covers the foundations of competitive play: hidden stats (EVs and IVs), natures, abilities, held items and building balanced teams.
Competitive basics
Every Pokémon has effort values (EVs) earned in battle and individual values (IVs) set when it is met. Combined with its nature, which raises one stat and lowers another, they make the difference between two specimens of the same species.
Building your team
A solid team covers its type weaknesses, combines complementary roles (physical attacker, special attacker, support, wall) and anticipates the threats of the metagame. The Club forums are there to analyze your lineups.
EVs and IVs in detail
A Pokémon can carry 510 effort points in total, with a useful maximum of 252 in any single stat; the classic spread is 252/252/4 across two key stats. EVs come from defeated Pokémon (accelerated by items like the Power series and Pokérus), while IVs are values from 0 to 31 fixed when the Pokémon is generated, shaped through breeding. Together they explain why two specimens of the same species at the same level can differ by dozens of stat points.
Natures worth knowing
| Adamant | +Attack, -Sp. Atk: the physical sweeper standard |
|---|---|
| Jolly | +Speed, -Sp. Atk: physical attackers that need to move first |
| Modest | +Sp. Atk, -Attack: the special attacker standard |
| Timid | +Speed, -Attack: fast special attackers |
| Bold / Calm | Defensive spreads for walls and support |
Team roles
A balanced six covers: a lead that sets the tempo (hazards or speed), physical and special sweepers, a wall or tank to absorb hits, a support piece (status, healing, screens) and a revenge killer, often holding a Choice Scarf, to answer an opposing sweep. Items define roles as much as movesets: Choice items for power, Leftovers for walls, Life Orb for mixed attackers, Focus Sash for frail leads.
The classic archetypes
Hyper offense stacks sweepers and momentum. Balance pairs two or three attackers with defensive backbone. Stall wins by attrition through hazards, status and healing. Weather teams, a fourth-generation signature, build around sandstorm or rain to boost specific attackers. Knowing which archetype you are playing tells you which trades to accept.
